Why do I have to take paper/pen notes when I have my ipad?
The iPads are tools we will utilize daily (or almost) for viewing resources, creating projects, exploring new topics, or interacting with one another and classroom material. However, writing will not die in my class! Sometimes, you will be able to take notes on smaller assignments on the ipad, but for lecture or book notes, pen and PAPER are a must.

Reasons concerning you as a student:
- Studies have shown that using a writing utensil instead of typing has cognitive benefits (see this LINK and this LINK and this LINK and this LINK)
- Your eyes will be relieved (there's a LINK for this too)
- Studies have shown that limited time in front of a screen is better for your health (see this LINK)
Reasons concerning me as a teacher:
- I like physical copies of your work and have never lost a hard copy of anyone's work (digital copies, however have "disappeared" through my own fault or "magically" (because they were never submitted)).
- I think too much time in front of a screen numbs us to our environment
- electronic assignments are too easy to copy
Teacher Bio:
A Little About Me
Hi! This is my seventh year at Summit High School, and I am just as excited to be here now as I was my first year. I grew up in Central Oregon, moved away for my education and adventures, and am so happy to be back in the region I adore at such an amazing school. I have taught an array of social studies courses (U.S. History, Religions, Geography, etc.), but my specialty is advanced psychology. I started my career teaching IB-level psych at Tualatin High School then started the AP psych program at Summit in the '14-'15 school year. I love how engaging the subject is for students, and I'm personally fascinated learning about current psychological research. My philosophy of teaching is to make connections. I enjoy getting to know my students on an individual level within and outside classroom interests, and I love seeing a student push him or herself to limits that seemed impossible. Students are also asked to make connections between concepts and between course material and their lives. My interests include being a mom of a toddler and new baby (the reason for my absence at the beginning of the year), travel, world dance styles, hiking, playing with my dogs, attending festivals of all kinds, and listening to live music. In my spare time, I love exploring the Bend restaurant scene, watching horrible reality tv shows (it's a weakness!), and investigating new parts of the U.S.A. I can't wait to get to know more about you! |
